Google Assistant finally allows you to program your connected objects by voice

Google Assistant is now able to program commands by voice. As Google points out, the voice assistant is able to turn on your smart bulbs at a specific time or for a preset amount of time. Until now, it was absolutely necessary to go through the Google Home app to plan the activation of an order.

Google has just announced the arrival of a major new feature for the Google Assistant. In a post published on its official website, the Mountain View firm explains: “the Scheduled Actions function allows users to easily schedule an order for their smart home to be triggered later”.

Concretely, users of an Android smartphone with Google Assitant or of a Google Home / Google Nest speaker will be able to plan the activation / deactivation of a connected object by speaking with the assistant. Thus, you can ask your connected speaker to turn on the light in your office at 8:30 a.m., to turn off the lamp in your room every day at 11 p.m. or to start your coffee machine on Sunday at 9 a.m. (via a socket connected by example).

Google Assistant widens the gap with Siri and Amazon Alexa

Finally, you can also ask the assistant to turn on a connected object for a limited time. For example, you can ask Google Home / Google Nest to turn on the toilet light for a period of 5 minutes. “Orders can be scheduled for the current day or another within the next 7 days,” says Google.

Until now, Google Assistant has only been able to issue an order at this time. For example, you could ask the assistant to turn on a light or turn off your television. Everything worked only in real time. To plan tasks or actions, you absolutely had to go through the Google Home app and schedule everything manually. The other voice assistants on the market, Amazon Alexa and Siri, have the same limitations. To automate tasks, you need to go to the Amazon Alexa app and create a routine. HomePod / HomePod Mini users must go through the Automation section of the built-in Home app by default on iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS.

Google had already announced the arrival of these new products at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. The addition of the option to its site suggests that the deployment has started. Unfortunately, we were unable to use these new commands on our Google Home. And at your home ? Were you able to plan the activation of a connected object only by communicating with Google Assitant? We await your opinion in the comments below.
