Google Drive will delete files stored by accounts that have been inactive for more than two years. To prevent your data from being erased, Google asks users of its service to log into their account regularly.
On November 11, 2020, Google announced several changes to the policy on the use of its services. First, the firm announced the end of free and unlimited storage on its Google Photos service. As of June 1, 2021, "content in high quality or express quality will be deducted from the storage space of your Google account". Not surprisingly, Google advises users to opt for a Google One subscription.
Secondly, Google brought up the case of Google Drive. Now, the search giant is granting itself the right to delete data stored by accounts that have been inactive for more than 2 years. “If you are inactive in one or more of the services for two years (24 months), Google may remove content from the service (s) for which you are inactive,” warns Google in a blog post. Same story if the storage space allocated to your account is full.
Google advises you to log in to Drive regularly
Of course, Google is committed to alerting users to the imminent deletion of their files. The firm promises to notify users "via emails and notifications" at least three months before the 2 years of inactivity. On this side, Google uses a procedure similar to that of its "inactive account manager", a service intended to delete the data of deceased users after a certain period of time.
To prevent your files from being deleted by Google, the firm invites you to log into your Google Drive account regularly. "The easiest way to keep your account active is to visit Google Drive regularly through a web browser or an official Google application," Google says. This new policy will come into effect on June 1, 2021. From this date, you will have 24 months to log into your account and prevent the disappearance of your files stored online.
